In the east, there is primarily fine and loamy fine sand geest =Achterhoek; the Montferland is a push moraine dating from the last Ice Age and the soil contains a large amount of fluvial sand and gravel; there is a smaller and older moraine in the area around Neede.
In the north-west, there are push moraines from the last Ice Age consisting primarily of often gravel-rich coarse and fine sands, and in some places fine sand drift sand = Veluwe, while, to the north-west, on the border with Utrecht, there is fine and loamy fine sand geest = Gelderse/Utrechtse Vallei.
The climate is characterised by:
